He spent much of his youth in and around the Piney Woods of East Texas before his family moved to Laurel, Miss., where he finished high school at George S. Gardiner High School in Laurel.
It was in Laurel where he met and married his wife Betty Graves Pattillo in 1962.
They were blessed to be married 54 years. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Following a short stint as a teacher, he opened a State Farm Agency in Laurel.
He was quickly tapped for management and he moved his growing family to Ocean Springs, Miss., then on to Austin and later to Fort Worth.
John and Betty were very active in many service organizations and socially making friends along the way.  They traveled the world, played golf and tennis, enjoyed being active members at church, welcomed friends into their home, took great pride in their family and always looked for ways to help others.
He remained with State Farm until his retirement in 1993.
Although he struggled with his health during this period, he made one last move back home to East Texas to the family farm in Bloomburg.
Never one to sit still, he decided to become a cattleman, raising Brangus cattle on his Texas and Arkansas land, entertaining family, friends, and a growing squad of granddaughters.
He was never happier than when he was surrounded by family at Thanksgiving, playing with his granddaughters, or a rising covey of quail behind a brace of his best pointers.
He was a man of integrity who loved others well.
His generous spirit touched countless people through the years, and his heart’s desire was that all would know the loving, saving Grace of Jesus.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his daughter, Susan Berning and husband John of Sulphur Springs; sons, Tom Pattillo and wife Kathy of Houston and John Pattillo and wife Jessica of Atlanta; sister, Sandra Pattillo Williams and husband Jeff of Ocean Springs, Miss.; granddaughters, Caroline Berning, Sarah Berning, Morgan Pattillo, Rylie Pattillo, Madison Pattillo and Aubrey Pattillo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was survived by two sons, Marcus Hodges and wife Kay of Atlanta and Jess L. “Lindy” Hodges and wife Shelia and their children, Jess H. “Big Jess” and Kayley of LaSalle, Ontario, Canada.
Thank you, Lord, for such a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was strong, energetic and a faithful friend. She loved to sew and made most of her clothes and many things for her children, grandchildren and friends. She was a good cook, but always said her mother was better. She was a talker from a family of talkers. She spoke with great love for her parents and brothers. She often said growing up on a farm during the Depression was the best preparation for life a child could have.
Preparing children for life, that is what she did for 25 years in the Texas public school system, but her boys came first. She only taught full time before they were born and after they were 12 years old. She loved her students and talked about them long after she retired from the classroom.
In retirement, Jess and Foncie were inseparable, except for ladies only trips she made with her college girlfriends. She enjoyed tutoring children, golfing with her husband and friends. She loved spending as much time as she could with her grandchildren. He dogs were more like grandchildren than dogs.
Her last years with dementia were difficult, but with the faithful care of her Jess, Marcus and Kay, she was able to stay in the family home as long as she did.
There are many to thank. First the Lord Jesus and the hope He extends beyond this life. Her church family, the Atlanta Church of Christ and others who prayed, visited and sent cards to encourage her.
Thanks to the staffs of Rose Haven Retreat, Heritage Hospice and Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home for their compassion. Thanks again to our special family friend, Faye Clayton, for her loving support.
The family encourages those who would honor Foncie’s memory to visit someone in the hospital or nursing home this week.
A family memorial will be later.
